On March 23rd, the Ocean Hills Republican Club held a forum amongst the Republican candidates for Congress, District 49. The event was attended by more than 150 local Republicans and a majority of attendees submitted ballots for the ensuing straw poll. The results were announced this week by Barbara Hazlett, President of the club and chair of the event. Maryott, the Mayor Pro Tem in San Juan Capistrano, received 41% of the votes. The closest competitor was Assemblyman Rocky Chavez with 18%. Diane Harkey and Joshua Schoonover rounded out the field at 8% and 5% respectively, while Dr. Mike Schmitt surprised coming in at 14%. Announced candidate Kristin Gaspar was not in attendance and did not register in the tally.

The evening covered a wide range of issues including health care, immigration reform, tax reform and foreign policy. The designation of California as a “sanctuary state” was covered in depth and gun control/second amendment issues were a focus as well.

“We are obviously pleased,” said Maryott. “This straw poll confirms what I’ve been sensing at the other forums as well; Republicans are anxious for a fresh face with strong business experience.” Maryott is recently retired from a career as a Certified Financial Planner and regional executive in the financial services industry.

The candidates will have several more opportunities to be together between now and the June 5th primary. Candidates across the party spectrum will take part in a forum on April 26th, hosted by the Carlsbad Action Network at Dove Library.
